PROGRAM
The aim of the workshop is the direct and in situ design comparison with some of the landscapes that have acquired a transcendent dimension, ancestors of a lived past and no longer just urban spaces and not even just architecture, but testimonies of a memory suspended on the border between history and literature, between art and architecture, invested with a hermetic and problematic magnificence in which history gives way to narration.
The architectural complexes of Villa Jovis on Capri and the archaeological complex of the city of Pompeii These sites form the central focus of a thematic program of interventions for the enhancement of archaeological areas in the Naples region. Design topics will include the redevelopment of open spaces, the arrangement of visitor services and facilities, and the planning of temporary or protective installations to improve visitor pathways, all aimed at exploring the interplay between architecture and archaeological sites.
The workshop is sized over eight days including arrivals and departures and includes, in addition to the four and a half days dedicated to the design activity, a half-day seminar with external interventions and a visit to the MANN/National Archaeological Museum of Naples, a visit to the Villa Jovis of Capri and a visit to the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.
The workshop will be held in Naples at Palazzo Latilla, headquarters of the Department of Architecture at the University of Naples Federico II. Activities are full-time during the workshop period. Experts in archaeology and architecture will provide lectures and talks on the interplay between architecture and archaeology. Participants will work in teams with tutor guidance, and projects will be subject to interim and final reviews.
