PROGRAM
The workshop, whose design experience is set in the Petra Archaeological Site in Jordan, focuses on exploring that particular form of construction embodied in rock-cut architecture.
In this setting, structures are formed by a process of subtraction, rather than the more conventional method of addition.
A spatial epiphany that moves beyond the tectonic dimension to embrace a predominantly stereotomic approach, where excavation produces architecture and the hands-on manipulation of materials—stone and earth—shapes the structures in a syncretic process between design and experience.
In this way, the relationship with the materials and their structure becomes inseparable from spatial intent, simultaneously encompassing the intrinsic properties of architecture, where the archetypal needs for shelter from danger merge with the requirements for protection against often extreme climatic conditions.
The design theme presents two main approaches: on one hand, it will develop through reflections centered on the relationship between solids and voids, and the exploration of light, which becomes a vital necessity in such introspective spaces; on the other hand, the very ontological connection with the ground inevitably leads to design implications that engage with the landscape dimension.”
This geological aspect is the red thread connecting the archaeological area and should steer the design proposals.
The site, endowed with exceptional charm and renown, will serve as the backdrop for a truly unique experience, addressing an archaeological yet fully design-oriented theme of remarkable subtlety, aimed at cultivating a refined sensibility in the participants.
The workshop spans nine days, including arrival and departure, and includes three and a half days of design development with a final public review, as well as one day dedicated to seminar contributions and several visits to other relevant Jordanian cultural heritage sites, scheduled during the remaining days.
