PROGRAM
The workshop will take place in Porto as a work location and in Coimbra as a study location.
The aim of the workshop is to enhance the Roman landscape and archaeological sites in Lusitanian land, with particular reference to the archaeological area of Conimbriga, the most important Roman city founded on Celtic pre-existences at the end of the second century BC, seventeen kilometers from today’s Coimbra.
Archaeologically stratified the city to recorded its moment of greatest development and prosperity in Flavian times, with the construction or expansion of important public buildings, baths, forum and temple of imperial worship in particular, and vital infrastructure, such as the road connecting Lisbon (Olissippo) and Braga (Bracara Augusta) and the aqueduct.
The architectural and urban systems of the Roman city therefore represent the narrative fulcrum of a thematic path of interventions for the enhancement of the archaeological area currently still affected by excavations. The redevelopment of open spaces, the provision of services and equipment for visitors, the study of temporary and protective installations to qualify the visit routes are some of the design themes that will be addressed to measure the relationship between architecture and archaeological sites.
The activities are full time for the days of the workshop. Personalities of archaeological and architectural culture will intervene with conferences and lessons on the relationship between architecture and archaeology. The projects will be addressed by working groups with the assistance of tutors and will be subjected to intermediate and final reviews.
The workshop is sized over seven days including arrivals and departures and includes, in addition to the three and a half days dedicated to the project activity, a seminar day with interventions by external speakers and visits, visits to Porto and inspections of the project areas at the Archaeological Park and the Museu Nacional de Conimbriga.
